3 Strategies for Practicing Math Vocabulary

Do your students struggle with math?

Do your students know their math vocabulary?

3 Strategies For Practicing Math Vocabulary

Math is a language like English, French, or Spanish. There are key concepts in math that need to be explained and well defined. How do your students understand math vocabulary? Do you have them practice the terms? Here are three strategies to use with your students for practicing new math vocabulary words.

1. Make an Interactive Math Word Wall.

What do you display on your classroom walls? Do your students create it or is it teacher made? Have your students create an Interactive Math Word Wall. Students will write the definitions and pictures for each word. Display their work on post-it notes beside or below the math word. Students will enjoy creating this word wall in your classroom. They will even ask if they can "cheat" and look at it during a quiz or test. Why do they ask this? It is a helpful reference for them to be reminded what the vocabulary word means. Math is a language that needs to be modeled and taught daily for comprehension.

2. Make a Math Writing Center

Do your students know how to write math? Do they need a scaffolded approach to using math word in context? Try using a Math Writing Center. When you do math centers or math workshops in your classroom have one center be writing math only. Students will work on writing sentences with important grade level math terms. This will help build students' math writing confidence. Students need to practice with a scaffolded approach. This is a great solution for students to learn how to write math terms in the appropriate context.

3. Make a Vocabulary Notebook.

How do your students learn and record new vocabulary? Do your students make math vocabulary maps? Students will take ownership of their Math Vocabulary Notebook. Have students write 3-5 terms per week. Students will add new math vocabulary word maps to their notebooks every week. At the end of the year they will have completed the entire year's list of grade level vocabulary.

Using math vocabulary notebooks is one way to practice vocabulary every week. Try a FREE math vocabulary map today!

Apollo 11 Moon Landing Math Activities 50th Anniversary

Did you hear about the 50th anniversary coming up?

Do your students love incorporating science into math?

Are you preparing for a Moon Space Unit?

Over fifty years ago three men did the impossible. They orbited the moon twelve times, then on the thirteenth orbit, the Lunar Module separated and landed on the Moon.

    Apollo 11 Moon Landing

Aldrin and Armstrong had done it. They successfully landed on the Moon. A historical event. They were the first humans ever to land on the Moon. But the story doesn't end there. It was like Christmas morning, they were so excited they had arrived on the Moon that they skipped their scheduled rest. They had just travelled four days through space and were supposed to rest? No. They suited up. Where were they going? To take the first Moon walk.

    The First Moon Walk

You probably have heard Armstrong's famous speech at least twice, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Such an amazing accomplishment for the United States! Share this year's 50th anniversary with your students.

    Apollo 11 Moon Landing Activities

The Apollo 11 Moon Landing Math Activities for grades 3, 4, 5 will engage your students in the history of science with math content. Activities include Lunar Landing passage, Making a Moon Landing, and Apollo 11 Math. Students will enjoy watching the Moon Landing video and responding to the historic event.

Students can also create their own lunar landing module. This is a low prep project that can be differentiated for students. Provide engaging learning memories that your students will never forget.

Writing Math in January (Grades 3-5)

Do your students need practice with writing?

Do your students struggle with learning vocabulary?

Getting your students to write Math more leads to deeper understanding of concepts. When learning any new language you will read and write it many times before you are fluent. Writing Math is a skill that needs to be practiced before it can be applied. Practicing vocabulary and writing will improve your students' test scores. Students who are able to express their math thoughts in writing are better able to talk about math.

A great January activity for writing Math is WRITE THE ROOM with Math. Included are 14 vocabulary terms, sentences, writing papers, rubric, and answer keys. Students write grade level vocabulary terms with a scaffolded approach. There are many different ways to use this activity. You can give the sentences with vocabulary terms or with fill-in-the blanks where students have to figure out the vocabulary words. Students build upon prior knowledge of concepts and use content clues to figure out which terms go with each sentence.

WRITE THE ROOM with Math can be used just like a task card activity at students' desks or as a gallery walk. The main focus of the activity is getting the students to think, write, and talk Math. Having students practice and apply vocabulary increase their understanding and in turn will help them to make more connections between concepts.

Getting your students to write Math, leads to a deeper understanding of concepts. Watch your students' knowledge grow as they become fluent in writing.

Challenge your students to write more Math this year. January is a great starting point before testing season. Watch your students accept the challenge to write more and master their vocabulary lists.

    Happy Teaching!
