Practice Writing Extended Responses in Math

Do your students struggle with writing in Math class?

Do your students need more practice writing extended responses?

Getting students to write about Math can be a challenge at first, but with practice and persistence your students can master writing Math fluently. There are many different strategies to use in getting your students to write math. Daily practice during math warm ups (bell work) is one strategy that can be very effective.

How to start writing math extended responses

At the beginning of the school year is the time to assess students’ math writing. This will be invaluable. Look for certain aspects in the writing process. See how well they write sentences and problem solve. This will allow you to see their strengths and weaknesses in writing math. Do they need to work on calculations? Do they need to work on writing? Are they proficient in grade level vocabulary?

First Steps

Mathematics is a thinking process that leads to more effective problem solving. Students need to practice problem solving more. Provide practice with Math vocabulary and writing Math prompts. The prompts are mostly open ended giving the student the ability to write openly about Math.

Next Steps

Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve math problems. Give students the opportunity to see and work through different problems. Have mathematical discourse about which strategies work best when solving these problems.

Final Steps

Monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving. Continue reviewing and evaluating each other’s responses. Show students a variety of responses to a math problem and discuss the errors in reasoning. This will be a powerful strategy and tool for students in building problem solving practice.

    Writing Math in January (Grades 6-8)

    Do your students struggle with writing?

    Do your students need more practice with vocabulary?

    Getting your students to write Math more leads to deeper understanding of concepts. Writing Math is a skill that needs to be practiced before it can be applied. Practicing vocabulary and writing will improve your students' test scores. Math is a language that you practice before you are fluent. Students who are able to express their math thoughts in writing are better able to talk about math.

    A great January activity for writing Math is WRITE THE ROOM with Math. Included are 14 vocabulary terms, sentences, writing papers, rubric, and answer keys. Students write grade level vocabulary terms with a scaffolded approach. There are many different ways to use this activity. You can give the sentences with vocabulary terms or with fill-in the blanks where students have to figure out the vocabulary words. Students build upon prior knowledge of concepts and use context clues to figure out which terms go with each sentence.

    WRITE THE ROOM with Math can be used just like a task card activity at students' desks or as a gallery walk. The main focus of the activity is getting students to think, write, and talk Math. Having students practice and apply vocabulary increases their understanding and in turn will help them to make more connections between concepts.

    Challenge your students to write more Math this year. January is a great starting point before testing season. Watch your students accept the challenge to write more and master their vocabulary lists.

    October WRITE THE ROOM with Math {Grade 6}

    Are you looking for fun October writing?

    Would you like to incorporate writing in your Math Stations?

    If you said YES, there is a new resource to help your students read and write Math more! This is one of my favorites for October.

    Get students moving, talking, and writing Math Vocabulary in your classroom with this set of 6th Grade Math Vocabulary Sentences. The purpose of this resource is to help students with increasing their mathematics vocabulary. Students write the Math sentences on their paper with scaffolded practice. Students are provided a list of vocabulary words to use to complete the sentences. Students will be engaged and more confident practicing using math vocabulary. This NO PREP Write the Room vocabulary activity can be a success in your classroom too!

    Included are:
    -Directions for setting up
    -List of vocabulary words
    -2 sets of scaffolded Math vocabulary sentences
    -2 sets of Math vocabulary sentences in Color and Black & White for easy printing
    -Rubric for EASY grading!
    -HIGH QUALITY GRAPHICS included
    -Student papers
    -6th Grade CCSS aligned
    -Monthly Theme of October {Halloween}

    This writing activity can be one week or one month long. To keep the writing all month long I recommend the 1st week having the students write the sentences with the words in them, the 2nd week have the students use the scaffolded sentences and figure out from key Math words what the vocabulary terms are, and then weeks 3 & 4 have the students write their own sentences with the Math vocabulary terms. Learning how to WRITE the Math is one strategy for becoming a more fluent and successful Mathematician. Practicing this skill is important and I have a bundle for the whole year if you would like to get your students writing more Math! Click HERE to view and download the Year-Long Bundle!
